Quiz 4: India
Theme: India
By: B.V.Harish Kumar
On: 28th September (Sunday, 1:00 pm), 2008
Review-ette: Harish conducted the fourth quiz of our theme league, a quiz on India. The elims saw a highest of 14 out of 28, giving you some idea that India wasn't the strong suit of any participant. Particularly since, in view of an upcoming quiz, Harish had stayed away from politics, cricket, and football. This made it a chance to learn more about exciting India, with several new avenues in Indian life being explored. There were many surprises (and the odd eyebrow raised), but it was a close quiz in the end.
We haven't decided when the next theme will be held, but it is unlikely to be in November, given the spate of other quizzes. Watch this page for more news.

Quiz 3: Sports
Theme: Sports
By: Yash Marathe
On: 23th August (Saturday, 1:00 pm), 2008
Review-ette: In contrast to the sci-tech quiz, we had several heavyweight sports quizzers in attendance for this quiz, making for a tight contest. The prelims were tough, but wide-ranging in themes. The finals were interesting, but in hindsight, the results were a little skewed by the (first) long connect question that had 125 points at stake and the fact that the rest of the quiz was low-scoring. A big plus was the variety of themes explored, and interestingly framed questions. The specialities round were interesting too, and unlikely answers came from the likes of Salil! We now have a perturbation of the scoresheet, with Aniket racing up the charts with his top performance today.
The next theme quiz is likely to be on India (by Harish), in the middle of September.

Quiz 2: Science and Technology
Theme: Science and Technology
By: Mohit Karve
On: 10th August, 2008
Review-ette: Since almost all participants were not much of sci-tech quizzers, the competition was tight and low-scoring. Some nice tech questions were covered in the finals, though good ol' science was represented a little less. Thanks to the heavy rains, some of the be-league-reds couldn't show up. The elims could have been a little better (framing especially) but since it is Mohit's first major quiz, it was a good beginning. The last scifi-vs-reality round was good. The latest scores have been published above and the next quiz will be on the 23rd on Sports by Yash Marathe.

Quiz 1: Movies of the West
Theme: Western movies (and some world movies)
By: Yash Tamaskar
On: 6th July, 2008
Review-ette: A good start for the league thanks to enthusiastic participants and adventurous quiz-setting; Yasho set aside his penchant for convoluted questions and questionable answers by setting a crisp set of questions on Hollywood. Aniket and Prashant led for most of the quiz, only faltering late due to the two special rounds (movie taglines and posters) where Mohit-Aadinath-Ramanand were helped by the points structure; Some participants seemed to lose interest at the end and the quiz exceeded its time limits, but all in all, we are off and running.

League Structure:
1. An experimental theme quiz league, one or two quizzes per month
2. Solo elims, team formation for the finals
3. Each participant gets points depending on performance; Points will be awarded to each participant in the elims; in addition, points will be awarded to the finalists based on final results.
4. To encourage participants to also set quizzes, each quiz will also be rated by the participants which will be added to the quiz-setters league score.
5. Each quiz's duration will not exceed 90 minutes (typically: 30 mins elims + 60 mins finals), which allows us to do other quizzes in the same BC session if necessary.
Elims Scoring: (We'll call the top 10 qualifiers in that elims as 'seeds')
1. Score = (your score/top score)*5
i.e. the elims topper gets 5 and the rest get points relative to the top score (we always round up to the nearest .0 or.5)
Finals Pairing:
We will have 5 teams in the finals.
1. Beginning with the seeds: 1-10, 2-9, …, 5-6
2. The rest are assigned randomly to teams beginning with the 1-10 team
Finals Scoring:
1. Members of winning Team: 5,…, 5th place = 1
2. But,
a. Only the seeds get the full value (i.e. 5 to 1)
b. The unseeded (seed-less?) get half (i.e. 2.5 to 0.5)
3. QM gets a score from 1 to 10 based on the following points split:
Elims: 2, Finals Content: 3, Thematic Variety: 2, Time Management: 1, Law 42 –Adherence: 1, Innovativeness: 1
4. At the end of the season, for each participant, we’ll leave out the lowest score and sum up the rest of the tally.
